A Book as a Friend – How do you build a reading project for nursing home residents, led by educators and trained volunteers?
The presentation of the case study A Book as a Friend—an initiative by the educational service of the older adult residences of the City of Treviso—highlights the role of educators, staff, and family members in an initiative that places reading at the center of well-being within residential and elderly care services.
Particular attention is given to every stage of the experience, including evaluation and documentation tools (activity logbooks, individual diaries, semi-structured group interviews, and volunteer interviews).

This session will outline the cognitive changes in older adults affected by dementia, which can impact the skills involved in reading, comprehension, perception, language, and memory. It will then illustrate the main evidence-based psychosocial interventions, highlighting picture books as an effective tool for engagement and cognitive-emotional stimulation.
